PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — While many remember former president Jimmy Carter for his energy policies or work in human rights, one local business is remembering his impact on something else: Beer. This weekend, Narragansett Brewing Company in Providence will have a new beer on tap to honor the late president. Company President Mark Hellendrung says the new beer will combine their award-winning Porter, with natural peanut butter flavoring, a nod to the first peanut farmer turned president. "People remember a lot of things about Jimmy Carter," Hellendrung said. "But maybe it's the little things that you get remembered for." In October 1978, Carter signed a bill that contained an amendment that effectively legalized home brewing in the United States. Hellendrung says that bill planted the seed of what would become a craft beer revolution. "Back then, in the '70s, there were probably only 100 breweries in the country," Hellendrung told 12 News. "You look at it today and there are over 9,000 breweries in America." Narragansett Brewing Company has reaped the benefits of the passage of that bill, according to Hellendrung. He said locals and people from across the country come in to try their craft beers on tap. Hellendrung urges brewers everywhere to raise a glass to the 39th President of the United States. "That's the role of government, presidents, is really to just provide the framework for innovation, entrepreneurship, and just growth and he certainly planted those seeds," Hellendrung said.
