Most locations this morning had dry and cold conditions. Temps bottomed out in the teens and 20s. Low Temperatures Most areas had no snow nor ice on the ground, but some areas north of Hampton Roads did still have some snow. Snow In Chincoteague Today we will have lots of sunshine. High pressure is building in from the west. Regional Weather Map The wind will be much less than yesterday. It will still be a bit breezy though. Winds will run at 8-12mph out of the northwest with a few gusts to 20mph near the shore. High temps will be in the upper 30s this afternoon. There will be enough wind to put the wind chills in the upper 20s to low 30s. Temperature VS Wind Chill By this evening a wind shift (black broken lines on the above map) will drop into the region. Clouds will increase a bit, but we'll still be pretty dry. So we'll only have a few flurries as that boundary slides through. Winds will pick up out of the north. They will gust to 30mph. Low temps will drop down to the low 20s tonight. Wind chills will drop to the teens and 20s. Tomorrow the wind will be stronger again. It will be very similar to yesterday's weather. We'll have lots of sunshine. Winds will gust to around 30mph with a few higher gusts near the shore. Wind Gusts Tomorrow This will keep high temps down in the mid 30s. Forecast Temperatures Thursday Wind chills will be in the 20s. We'll be dry all day tomorrow and all day Friday. However, on Friday an area of low pressure will form along the Gulf coast as a big upper level trough (dip in the jet stream) swings down that way. Future Trak Friday Morning We'll have an increase in clouds here during the day. High temps will likely be in the low 40s. During the evening the moisture will increase ahead of the low. At first there may be some brief virga, but the moisture should increase quickly. So this will become a zone of snow and a mix for a time. GFS Friday Evening This will continue into Saturday morning. However, the rain/snow line will start to work northward through the morning. GFS Model Saturday Morning The rain/snow line will keep moving north through the day. The precip may become all rain by midday or the early afternoon. The European model does have it change over to rain, but it already kicks out the precip by about 1pm. European Model Saturday Afternoon Either way we should then dry out by the late afternoon and evening. This will be a fast moving system. Very fast! That should limit how much snow we get. Also the mix and rain should act to melt some of the snow. It could even melt all of it if the amounts are light. For now I have high temps in the low 40s during the day, but that could also change. The European model does have a bit of a colder scenario, but it doesn't really have much more snowfall totals due to its faster speed. GFS VS Euro Snowfall The latest NAM model (Not shown) has the band of 2-3" inches over the heart of Hampton Roads. There is a still a lot of time for the pieces of this puzzle to come together. It's still out of range of the higher-resolution NAM and most of Future Trak's timeline. So be sure to check back tomorrow for the updates. The finer details of the forecast should start coming together. Course we'll see how those other models handle the speed of the low and the precip changeover. In national news...The recent wildfires in California are historic for how fast they formed and moved over a large area. Some of the winds out there were of hurricane-force (74mph or greater). The damage is extensive. Mild temps, dry air, and strong winds are fueling the fires. Here's an article with updates. Southern California wildfires. Meteorologist: Jeremy Wheeler
