Will xAi power expansion impact MLGW during the storm?

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- With the first batch of winter weather heading toward the Mid-South, the demand for the city's power grid will see a major uptick.
For the first time, Elon Musk's xAi supercomputer will be using some of that power too as they are looking to double energy demands, but Memphis, light, Gas, and Water officials are saying not too fast.
MLGW's president and CEO Doug McGowen says they are currently providing 50 megawatts of power to the supercomputer and that they anticipate giving xAi the approved 150 megawatts of power by next month.
Is MLGW ready to handle cold, xAI expansion? Utility says yes.
However, Musk's expansion is looking to increase that to 300 megawatts between two phases.
McGowen says before offering the additional power, he wants to conduct a formal study to make sure it doesn't cause problems to the city's existing grid structure.
"People want to bring more jobs and more money to our community through taxes and additional commerce, but on the other side, there are still some hoops to get through. One of those is making sure we have sufficient utilities to meet the need and what the potential new company would be needing from us," McGowen said.

He says the study could take several months to complete due to multiple factors that have to be considered and have not yet been initiated.
When it comes to the winter storm, McGowen says they are prepared, have insulated pipes, and made resources available to keep all their facilities open during that time.
