LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) — The bitter cold, ice and snow have made conditions nearly impossible to live in for those without a home. “This is not only hypothermia weather and frostbite weather, but actually death weather,” Ginny Ramsey with the Catholic Action Center said. She says volunteers have been working 12-15 hours a day driving around and helping people find shelter. “We have over 115 people we’ve put into safe shelter,” she said. Unfortunately, there are many people out there they still haven’t been able to help. Ramsey says they’re hiding in fear of being arrested because of House Bill 5 which prohibits sleeping on the streets. “That’s why we started last Thursday, going out finding the deeper camps,” she said. “Even though we know the people, we go to a camp, and they’re gone.” The people they’ve helped so far are either in local organization’s shelters or hotel rooms. “We actually have filled one hotel, and we don’t know that we can go beyond that,” she said. She says a $45 donation gives three people a warm place to stay for one night. “The community’s been wonderful,” Ramsey said. “We asked for sandwiches; we got over 5,000.” Now they’re asking for donations of fresh fruit, individual snacks and hot chocolate mix. “We all knew this was coming, and we all knew the survival of these human beings depended on getting shelter,” she said. You can visit the Catholic Action Center’s website to make a donation or drop off any donations at 1055 Industry Road.
