Light snow Wednesday ahead of heavier snow on Friday
Jan 08, 2025
LEXINGTON, Ky (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) – Happy Wednesday! The arctic air mass in place has given us ideal conditions for off and on snow showers across the region for your day today. Thanks to the frigid air above us, it does not take much moisture at all to put down a light snow. That’s exactly the case today. These off and on snow showers will likely briefly coat roadways and your cars.. Thankfully since it’s so light and fluffy, you should be able to easily brush it off your car. This snow is light, but the snow on the way Friday into Saturday will be heavier.
Before we get the snow chance on Friday we will continue to deal with frigid conditions through Thursday. Overnight lows will fall into the low 10s and even single digits in a few spots. It won’t as cold as we originally had in our forecast because we will likely keep the cloud cover around. Remember, clear skies with a snowpack on the ground will allow temperatures to plummet. However, cloud cover acts like a “blanket” and moderates temperatures just enough to hold us back from the extreme cold. Thursday will remain cold throughout the day with afternoon highs reaching the mid-20s.
Attention then turns to yet another winter storm tracking through the area. This one is different than the last, with areas to our south facing the brunt of the storm. Locally, heavy snow is in the forecast for large chunk of Kentucky. A large chunk of central, southern, and southeastern Kentucky already have a Winter Storm Watch issued for Friday into Saturday. This is where the highest confidence is for the heavy snow at the moment. This area will likely change and areas not within the Winter Storm Watch will likely still have at-least a Winter Weather Advisory issued as we get closer to this storm.
Our current forecast has 3-6 inches of snow in the forecast across the southern half of Kentucky. We currently have 2-4 inches of snow in the forecast for the I-64 corridor-northward. This could be increased if confidence grows in heavier snow making it’s way further north. Some of the latest model data does suggest there could be a heavier band of snow that works its way further north, so be alert for potential changes to the forecast.
We aren’t done with the snow after that either. Another quick moving clipper system could drop light snow by the end of the weekend and into early next week. This a harsh winter pattern, even for January standards. This month will likely go down as one of those memorable snow months that many remember from years ago.
