Former MLB pitcher, first round pick dead at age 37

BALTIMORE (WGHP) — Brian Matusz, a former MLB pitcher who spent most of his career with the Baltimore Orioles has died at the age of 37, according to the Baltimore Orioles.
The Orioles selected Matusz with the fourth overall pick in the first round of the 2008 MLB Draft after he had an illustrious career pitching at the University of San Diego.

Matusz, a left-handed pitcher, played in the majors with the Orioles from 2009-2016 and spent some time with the Chicago Cubs in 2016 in his last year in the MLB.

According to Baseball Reference, Matusz finished his career with a 27-41 record, 4.92 earned runs average and 462 strikeouts in over 528 innings pitched.
MLB.com recalled that Matusz was known for pitching well and being a strong matchup against Baseball Hall of Famer and Boston Red Sox legend David Ortiz. Ortiz had a .138 batting average against Matusz with 13 strikeouts in their career matchups.
The Orioles released the following statement:

A staple in our clubhouse from 2009-2016, Brian was beloved throughout Birdland, and his passion for baseball and our community was unmatched. He dedicated his time to connecting with any fan he could, was a cherished teammate, and always had a smile on his face.
Brian’s family and loved ones are in our thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.
