Gas station clerk abducted during WinstonSalem robbery, suspect, victim found in Tennessee

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (WGHP) — A gas station clerk was abducted during an armed robbery in Winston-Salem overnight Wednesday, according to the Winston-Salem Police Department.
At around 12:31 a.m. on Wednesday, officers came to the Speedway gas station on 2700 University Parkway to conduct a security check. At the scene, police found the store empty with no store clerk inside.
Investigators then reviewed surveillance footage from the store which revealed that the store clerk had been abducted by an "unknown subject" during an armed robbery at 11:46 p.m.
An Ashanti Alert went out for the victim's vehicle at 3:37 a.m. on Wednesday.
After collaboration with other jurisdictions, investigators found the victim's vehicle in Erwin, Tennessee near Interstate 26.
Deputies with the Unicoi County Sheriff's Office attempted to pull the vehicle over which led to a brief chase.
Eventually, the suspect, DeAngelo Shamond Toomer, 40, of Winston-Salem, was taken into custody. Toomer has an extensive criminal history that includes 14 convictions in the state of South Carolina.
The store clerk was found unharmed but restrained in the backseat of the vehicle.
Erwin, Tennessee is 143 miles away and a 3-hour-5-minute drive from the Speedway where the robbery took place, according to Google Maps.
Police say that the suspect and victim do not know each other.
