AM Headlines: Cold and Dry Cold Weather Advisory Winter Storm Friday – Saturday Dry & Cold Weekend Discussion: Today will be cold, but sunny with highs ranging from the upper 20s in the mountains to the low 40s across the Piedmont as high pressure keeps a supply of cold air in place. Wind chills will fall below zero again this evening in the mountains with lows in the teens and 20s across the rest of the area. A cold weather advisory will go into effect tonight for Avery County. It will remain cold and quiet through Thursday. All eyes on Friday’s winter storm as a low pressure slides into the southeast out of the Gulf. Models are in really good agreement at this point with this storm. Snow is likely beginning Friday afternoon from west to east. The transition zone as warmer air aloft nudges in will remain the I-85 corridor after midnight leading to a mix of sleet/freezing rain and gradually a cold rain before the wintry weather clears Saturday morning. The highest totals will be for the mountains with accumulations of 4-8 inches above 4000 feet. The foothills will likely see 2-4 inches of snow and up to .1″ of ice. Near the I-85 corridor we’ll see 1-2″ of snow with up to .2″ of ice. While areas south and east of I-85 will see brief snow/sleet Friday, it will transition to freezing rain and rain quickly leading to less than an inch of snow and up to .25″ of ice. Driving will be hazardous with icy conditions Friday night into Saturday morning. Conditions improve through the weekend but it will remain cold with highs remaining below average through next week.
