News conference to discuss lawsuits in Brittanee Drexel case canceled
Jan 08, 2025
HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) -- A virtual news conference scheduled to discuss lawsuits related to the disappearance and death of Brittanee Drexel was canceled Wednesday morning shortly after lawyers announced it would take place in a news release.
Dawn Pleckan, Brittanee's mother, told News13 that a news conference would instead take place after the sentencing for Angel Vause in U.S. District Court. Vause, the girlfriend of Drexel's killer, Raymond Moody, faces up to 24 years in prison on three counts of making a false statement to federal agents.
Pleckan said she could not elaborate on the topics of the news conference but said she would address them after Vause's sentencing, which has not been scheduled.
The Charleston-based Anastopoulo Law Firm had announced the 1 p.m. news conference early Wednesday morning, saying it would cover "topics related to civil and criminal developments" in the Drexel case.
Drexel went missing while vacationing with friends during spring break in Myrtle Beach in April 2009. Her remains were found in May 2022 in a remote area of Georgetown County.
Raymond Moody was arrested a week before authorities recovered Drexel's remains and charged with murder, kidnapping, and criminal sexual conduct. He pleaded guilty in October 2022 and is currently serving a life sentence.
The Drexel case has sparked multiple lawsuits, including one filed by her estate in late 2023 that named the Bar Harbor Resort, the Smith Family Partnership and Moody. It said Drexel was a minor when she stayed at Bar Harbor in 2009 without the permission of her parents.
The resort responded in January 2024, saying that Drexel was never a registered guest at the resort but that she might have been friends with another person staying at the resort.
Pleckan previously filed a lawsuit in January 2023 seeking a judgment against Moody for all “damages” suffered as a result of the loss of her daughter.
In the lawsuit, Pleckan said she had suffered severe and emotional distress since Brittanee's disappearance. It said Moody’s actions deprived her of the love and affection that a child can give a parent.
This is a developing story. Count on News13 for updates.
