Man gets life term for 2022 deadly shooting in Oildale

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- A man found guilty of murder in the shooting death of his former neighbor in Oildale was sentenced Wednesday to 56 years to life in prison.
Jarrit Perrett, 41, was convicted last year in the slaying of Derol Louis Del Rio, 62. He also was convicted of two counts of manufacturing or distributing an assault weapon.
Two females -- they were described as his adopted daughters -- whom Del Rio housed, fed and took to school while their mother was in jail spoke with emotion about their loss at Wednesday's sentencing hearing. Del Rio took care of them until their mother could.
"My dad did not deserve this at all," one said.
Around 4 a.m. on April 3, 2022, Perrett drove to Del Rio’s home while armed with five guns, more than 300 rounds of spare ammunition, lighter fluid, a lighter and police radio scanner, according to prosecutors. When Del Rio answered the door, Perrett fired three shots from an AR-15 rifle.
Del Rio was hit in the chest and died at the scene.
Defense counsel argued Perrett suffered from mental health disorders that made him hallucinate and lose awareness of what he was doing, but psychologists testified he knew his actions were wrong when he fired, according to prosecutors.
Perrett and Del Rio were neighbors for years until Perrett moved away in 2021. Afterward, he harassed Del Rio and vandalized his home, prosecutors said.
