ROUND ROCK, Texas (KXAN) -- A man died Tuesday night after having a standoff with Round Rock Police and the SWAT team after he crashed his vehicle and shot at officers, according to the police chief. The Round Rock Police Department said on X Tuesday night that police were actively investigating an officer-involved shooting at southbound I-35 near Westinghouse Road. RRPD said southbound I-35 at Westinghouse Road was shut down late Tuesday night. It was later reopened just before midnight. Round Rock Police Chief Allen Banks said in a press conference overnight that the incident started as a response to a 911 call that came in around 9:40 p.m. about a single-vehicle accident involving a vehicle that went off-road into a field near Texas Crushed Stone. The caller stated that she believed the driver was intoxicated because he was driving erratically before he crashed his vehicle, Banks said. Banks said when officers got to the scene, a man got out of the vehicle and started walking westbound into a wooded area. Officers tried to search for him in the tree line but could not find him so they deployed a drone. The drone located the man and he started shooting at officers and the drone, Banks said. According to Banks, this went on for several minutes, but officers did not shoot back because the man was hidden in the tree line. (KXAN News/Frank Martinez)The Round Rock Police Department said police were actively investigating an officer-involved shooting Tuesday night at southbound I-35 near Westinghouse Road. (KXAN News/Frank Martinez) The SWAT team was called to the scene and when they arrived and approached the tree line, there was a "confrontation" between the man an officer, and the officer fired a round at him, Banks said. Banks said it's not clear if the officer struck the man and there was "indication that there was also a self-inflicted gunshot wound." The man was pronounced dead on the scene. The Round Rock Police Department and the Texas Rangers are investigating the shooting and the district attorney was notified. Banks said multiple agencies responded to the scene once shots were fired at officers, including the Georgetown Police Department, Cedar Park Police Department, Department of Public Safety, and Williamson County Sheriff's Office, as well as the Round Rock Fire Department. No officers were injured during the shooting. Banks said one officer was placed on administrative leave pending further investigation, which is the normal protocol for officer-involved shootings. This was the first officer-involved shooting of 2025 for the Round Rock Police Department, and there were none in 2024, according to Banks.
