As I reflect on the Park City I’ve have loved since 2005, I’m disheartened by the changes that have transformed our community. The Park City I fell in love with 20 years ago was a vibrant, tight-knit town that seamlessly blended small-town charm with world-class skiing and snowboarding. However, the relentless expansion of Vail Resorts has brought unprecedented growth, congestion and commercialization. The very essence of our community is being eroded, and I understand that the Park City I once knew and loved is gone. The ongoing labor dispute between Vail Resorts and our ski patrollers is a stark reminder of the company’s priorities. While Vail Resorts continues to reap massive profits, our ski patrollers — the very people who keep our slopes safe — are fighting for fair wages and better working conditions. It’s unacceptable that Vail Resorts has failed to negotiate in good faith with these dedicated professionals. But this labor dispute is just the tip of the iceberg. The massive pay discrepancy between Vail Resorts top executives including CEO Kirsten Lynch, who received a total compensation package of $6,288,586, and the company’s frontline workers is a glaring example of corporate greed. While Vail Resorts executives take home millions, many of our ski patrollers and other resort workers struggle to make ends meet and put food on the table. Furthermore, I am deeply concerned about the actions of Deirdre Walsh, COO of Park City Mountain. Her prioritization of profits over safety is alarming. By putting Vail Resorts guests in danger to maximize profits, Walsh is demonstrating a reckless disregard for the well-being of our community. As someone who’s witnessed the transformation of Park City first hand over 20 years, I urge our community to take a step back and assess the true costs of Vail Resorts’ growth. We deserve better. Our ski patrollers deserve better. And our community deserves better. It’s time for Vail Resorts to prioritize people over profits and to work towards a more sustainable and equitable future for all.Andy LundbergPark CityThe post Stark reminder appeared first on Park Record.
