City provides winter weather waste management update
Jan 08, 2025
City offices for employees not involved in weather response will operate on a two-hour delay today, Jan. 8, 2025.
City Streets & Roads crews are continuing to work around the clock to treat and clear roads in Lexington. All crews involved in snow removal duties are working 24 hours a day in alternating 12-hour shifts.
Waste Management Update
The City will only collect trash, not recycling or yard waste, for the rest of this week, Thursday, Jan. 9 and Friday, Jan. 10. Recycle carts, yard waste carts and yard waste on the curb will not be collected until next week.
The City will collect Monday and Thursday trash on Thursday, Jan. 9, and Tuesday and Friday trash on Friday, Jan. 10. Everyone is encouraged to put their trash cart out the night before their collection day since the trucks will be running a double route and may start early in the morning.
Businesses with dumpsters that are only emptied on Mondays or Tuesdays will be collected on Thursday, Jan. 9, or Friday, Jan. 10, depending on the accessibility of the dumpsters. Businesses are encouraged to make sure that snow is not piled in front of the dumpster enclosures and locks are not frozen over.
The Haley Pike Waste Management Facility, the Lexington Recycle Center and the Electronics Recycling Center are open on a two-hour delay on Wednesday, Jan. 8 and will return to regular hours on Thursday, Jan. 9.
The Free Trash Disposal Day scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 11, is still planned for 6 a.m. – noon at the Bluegrass Regional Transfer Station, 1505 Old Frankfort Pike.
Sign up for text alerts about changes to your waste collection schedule by texting your regular collection day (MONDAY, TUESDAY, THURSDAY or FRIDAY) to 888777. Sign up for email alerts at lexingtonky.gov/311alerts.
Snow Emergency
Mayor Linda Gorton declared a snow emergency for Lexington on Monday. The city’s Emergency Operations Center is partially activated, and all public safety divisions are on 24-hour schedules through Thursday, Jan. 9.
While the declaration does not ban parking on snow emergency routes at this stage, residents are encouraged to avoid parking on these streets if possible. This will help city crews clear the streets more effectively. Snow emergency routes are major streets throughout the city and are marked by signage.
The snow emergency also allows for a delay in the implementation of the city’s ordinance requiring property owners to clear sidewalks.
Office of Homelessness Prevention and Intervention
The Office of Homelessness Prevention and Intervention has extended its Emergency Winter Weather Plan through Friday morning. The plan focuses on assisting those who are seeking shelter from the cold weather. The Emergency Weather Plan and a list of shelters are available at lexingtonky.gov/homelessness-prevention-and-intervention. Residents who see someone who may need shelter should call LexCall at 311 to be connected with the Office of Homelessness Prevention and Intervention. After business hours, contact the Street Outreach team at (859) 551-8053 or (859) 556-1870. In case of an emergency, call 911.
Public Safety
Between midnight and 6 a.m. today, the Lexington Police Department responded to one non-injury collision, no injury collisions, three traffic hazards, one escort and four calls for motorist assistance. Drivers should allow themselves plenty of the time to reach their destination and are reminded to clear their front and rear windshields and mirrors of snow and ice before driving. Motorists are reminded to drive slowly, and increase following distance.
Lexington is expected to have cold conditions with temperature lows in the single digits through Thursday and drivers should be aware of the possibility of black ice.
The Lexington Fire Department urges residents to use caution with home heating equipment. Space heaters should be at least 3 feet away from combustibles. Generators and grills should never be used inside a home.
Prolonged exposure to dangerously cold temperatures can put pets in danger. Contact the Lexington-Fayette Animal Care and Control at (859) 225-9033 to report the mistreatment or neglect of an animal.
Residents can get information on accidents, lane blockages, snow-and-ice trouble spots and road closures through the city’s Traffic Management X account @lexwrecks. They can also view traffic at major intersections in real time through the city’s traffic cameras at lexingtonky.gov/traffic.
