FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WNCN) — A man who was killed in a hit-and-run in Cumberland County Monday night was possibly walking to get gas for his pickup truck, officials said.
The crash on NC 24 was reported just before 7:10 p.m. Monday, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
Anthony Hobbs, 50, drove a pickup truck with crosses on it that was familiar to some in the Fayetteville area.
Hobbs left his pickup truck along NC 24 near Interstate 95 after he told others he ran out of gas, according to the highway patrol.

Hobbs was walking west toward Fayetteville in the middle of a lane near Downing Road when he was hit by a car and died, state trooper McBride said Tuesday.
The driver of the car left the scene. At least one other car also hit Hobbs after he was down and that driver did not stop either, McBride said.
"I don't know why he was walking in the middle of the road," McBride said.
Troopers said they do not have any leads on what kind of vehicle hit Hobbs, who did not appear to have a fixed address.
Westbound NC 24 heading toward Fayetteville was closed for about three hours Monday night while authorities investigated the matter, according to the N.C. Department of Transportation.
