'It's like a ski village': Some DC residents frustrated over snow removal in neighborhoods

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) -- A lot of people expressed frustration Tuesday over the conditions on roads in D.C. after a storm blanketed the District in nearly half a foot of snow early Monday morning.
Driving through Southeast D.C., a lot of main roads are clear after days of snowfall, but many neighborhoods are still covered.
"It's like a ski village, you know, they don't actually, like, do much to take away the snow on the roads. They just kind of leave you to fend for yourself," said Austin Fiala.
Fiala spent Tuesday night clearing off his car before work on Wednesday. He's not happy D Street SE near 11th Street SE isn't clear.
How long do I have to clear sidewalks of snow and ice?
"Pennsylvania [Avenue is] great, because Pennsylvania's the escape route and so on. But yeah, our road, which is a block away from Pennsylvania hasn't been touched by salt, by plows, anything like that. All you see is just from people driving over it," he said."
"It could be better. They do a good job getting salt down. But then after the initial snow ... I haven't seen anybody on D Street. I think I saw one plow come through earlier," said Andrew Bourne.
While some think there's room for improvement, others are satisfied with the District's response.
"Our road is fine. Our road is good. We're out and about. The pavement, the sidewalk, is good. So yeah, we're happy," said Paul Murray. "I think they've done a good job. This isn't a typical thing we have every year."
A remaining concern among Washingtonians is dropping temperatures, making snow and slush freeze further into ice.
"I'm glad I'm doing this ... before it starts getting more frozen. But yeah, I mean, look at my road," Fiala said. "All this that I'm making and putting on the ground, when that freezes, that's really going to be a problem for trying to get out of here in the morning."
A few plow trucks drove along D Street on Tuesday night, one of which had its plow down and another spreading salt on the road. Still, a significant amount of slush remained.
You can keep up to date with which roads have been plowed and where the plows are on the District Snow Team tracker.
