FORECAST: Frigid wind chills for the next few days
Jan 07, 2025
Bitter cold wind chills will be the big story through Thursday, as the weather pattern keeps blustery winds locked in over the DMV. Each night, we'll have wind chills in the single digits in and around DC, with below-zero values likely to the west in the higher terrain. There will be improvement each afternoon with the sunshine, but wind chills should still only hit the teens and 20s, so be sure to bundle up appropriately. No additional snow or wintry precipitation is forecasted through Thursday across most of the area, with the only exception being the mountains. Winds climbing up and over the mountains and moisture coming off the Great Lakes will lead to waves of snow across Garrett, Mineral, and Allegany Counties, producing at least another 2-5" of snow. Winter Weather Advisories are in place across these counties to address that threat.
As colder air continues to linger into the end of the week, our attention will be on an approaching storm system coming up from along the Gulf Coast. Much like this last storm, exact details on this storm's path will play a massive role in what potential impacts may unfold here in the DMV. If this storm stays well south of us, we won't see any additional snow before the weekend. If it tracks more north, we could see another round of impactful, accumulating snow. Nothing is guaranteed yet, but we will likely catch a glancing blow from this storm as things stand now. This will give us scattered snow late Friday night into Saturday morning, enough to add a few more inches to what's out there already. Again, exact details like possible forecasted snowfall amounts will become apparent over the next few days, but the start of the weekend could be our next round of snowy weather. It stays cold as we head into early next week.
