ONTARIO, N.Y. (WROC) — History was made on Tuesday night as Cameron Blankenberg became Wayne's all-time leading scorer in a victory over Newark, leading the Eagles to a 9-0 record.
Blankenberg broke the record previously set by his brother Logan. The feat adds to a historic month for the junior who comes off a win against Midlakes where he set the single-game scoring record with 46 points, also previously held by his brother.
Newark had a strong start in the first quarter, but a 10-0 run from Wayne put it out front and the Eagles never looked back. At the end of the quarter, they led 18-11. At the half, they extended their lead, 35-22.
Blankenberg's record-breaking points came at the end of the third quarter as he moved around a defender for an easy layup, marking his 18th point of the night. He brought his total to 24 at the final buzzer, giving him 1,215 career points as just a junior.
Wayne defeated Newark 71-54 to pick up its ninth win of the season and remain undefeated.
Aidan Twist added 23 points, making five three-point jumpers, and Richie Miles had 16 points with four three-pointers. Cory Jones added eight points.
Newark was led by Terrell Jenkins with 14 points. Eric Flynn tallied 11, and Sam Underhill and Levar Moore each scored 10.
Wayne (9-0) next faces Palmyra-Macedon on the road on Friday, January 10th. Newark (3-6) will travel to Canandaigua on Wednesday, January 8th.
