HANOVER COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- While the city of Richmond deals with its own water outage issues, Hanover County neighbors are feeling the effects. Following a malfunction of the city's reservoir system, both Richmond and multiple surrounding counties -- including Hanover -- are experiencing issues with their water. "We got notification from Richmond that the water treatment and water power facility was still going to [remain] out of service," said Hanover Fire and EMS Captain and public information officer John Cundiff. "so "So, what we did was we took immediate action to close it and close off the supply from Richmond." Cundiff said that, because Hanover gets water supply from Richmond, Hanover residents east of Interstate 95 are asked to conserve water if they have it. Cundiff said that many do not, but those west of I-95 might. No matter where you are in Hanover, you still need to follow a boil water advisory. Water distribution sites at Atlee High School and Cold Harbor Elementary School were open today between 3 and 7 p.m. -- and both walkers and drivers came to get their water. "We are going through a case of water every four minutes," Cundiff said. "Over 1600 cases of water have been distributed so far." Line at Atlee High School during water distribution on Jan. 7. (Photo: Jakobi Davis/8News) Atlee High School’s parking lot was filled with cars waiting for water, stretching all the way to the football field. "[It's] the only way you're going to get water … I mean, the stores are empty," said Hanover resident Catherine Keenan, who 8News talked to while she waited in line. "So you just go with the flow, you do what you got to do. I mean, it's our lifeline." Catherine's daughter, Jovi, is a freshman at Atlee High School. It normally takes them just four minutes to get to the school. Today, they said it took them almost two hours. "We had to take a long line down the road -- and then, when you get into the high school, they put you through the parking lot in a snake line," she said. "So that was kind of cool, but it's also really safe." Hanover officials previously announced that the distribution sites were running low on water. Then, just after 5 p.m., both sites got additional supply from Wegman's. IN RICHMOND: Richmond residents will have to go longer without water as another malfunction delays restoration efforts "We decided we were going to walk over and get water [rather than drive] because of the really long traffic line," said Giles County neighbor Katie Zavodny. Zavodny, whose water was turned off in Giles County the previous night, works at Hanover Hospital and heard about the water giveaway through her workplace. Not all residents were as informed. "There was no communication on our phones -- you would think that they would say 'Boil your water,'" Catherine Keenen said, frustrated. "This is an emergency … I was doing laundry all day without knowing." The Keenan family learned about the water situation when Atlee High School canceled classes for the following day, but they said communication from officials had been lacking. As a result, fire officials are working to improve the flow of information to residents. "If you're west of 95, we're asking for the Ashland and Doswell locations that have county water to conserve, as well," Cundiff said. "We anticipate this going on [for] at least for the next 24 hours, we do have a boil water [advisory] in effect and we're doing that [to be] precautionary. We know that our pressures are low. And with that, we want to make sure that our citizens are safe." In the meantime, distribution sites remain open to assist those in need, with each vehicle allowed one case of water. Times for Wednesday's distribution sites will be confirmed around 9 a.m., alongside an update on Hanover's water shortage from county officials.
