Jan 07, 2025
FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - After 13 seasons of professional hockey - including ten with the Komets - Shawn Szydlowski announced his retirement on Tuesday night.
The 34-year old from St. Clair Shores, Mich., tallied 189 goals and 322 assists in 528 regular season games with Fort Wayne. His 511 points are 10th all-time in Komets history. He is ninth in franchise history in games played, 11th in assists, and 12th all-time in goals.
His best individual season in Fort Wayne came during the 2017-18 season where he was named the ECHL's MVP after leading the league with 79 points. A three-time ECHL All-Star, he helped lead the Komets to the Kelly Cup in 2021.
Szydlowski has not played this season. He last suited up for the Komets during the 2023-24 season, playing 52 games with 10 goals and 14 assists.
Szydlowski is currently working in health insurance in the Detroit area. He told WANE-TV that he's going to step away from hockey for a year, but hopes to get into coaching - perhaps at the juniors level - in the future.
