NORTH TONAWANDA, N.Y. (WIVB) -- A new partnership between NANO Nuclear Energy and Digihost Technology Inc. could bring nuclear technology to a crypto mining plant in North Tonawanda.
On Dec. 12, Digihost and NANO Nuclear signed a memorandum of understanding to bring nuclear reactor technology to the current plant on Erie Avenue.
North Tonawanda Mayor Austin Tylec's office has been flooded with questions from residents following the announcement, but there currently aren't many answers.
"It sparks some concerns when anyone hears nuclear," Tylec said. "Right now, we're really digging into the details with it. There's not a ton of information."
According to a press release from Nano Nuclear Energy, the main reason for the collaboration is to improve the environmental concerns at the current Digihost plant.
“The opportunity to collaborate with NANO Nuclear represents a bold move toward achieving our sustainability goals,” said Michael Amar, CEO of Digihost Technology. "By leveraging NANO Nuclear’s advanced nuclear reactor technology, we gain the potential ability to scale quickly across our existing power assets following successful initial deployment."
On the contrary, Tylec said the idea of nuclear power and industrial waste sites in North Tonawanda is causing some pushback.

"The questions that come to be are, 'What happens to the waste? Is there any potential for explosions?" Tylec said. "These are all things that we brought up or have heard concerns about."
The announcement comes six months after the North Tonawanda Common Council voted to approve a two-year moratorium on all crypto mining developments in the city, which passed unanimously in July.
Tylec said North Tonawanda does not currently have any zoning categories to regulate something like NANO Nuclear. He plans on working with local environmental activities and neighboring municipalities to change that.
"For residents out there that are wondering, we are aware that there are concerns with this type of industry," Tylec said. "We're going to make sure we get to the bottom of it."
Tylec also emphasized that NANO Nuclear said the target date for the reactor integration isn't until 2031. He said he will use this time to make sure all questions from residents are answered and all concerns are heard.
