BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — A paraprofessional at the Dufrocq School teaches students about the braille system.
Anthony Parker is visually impaired. He lost his eyesight at the age of two due to German measles and is teaching students that being visually impaired is not stopping him from living his life.
"Although I can't see, you know, and I may look a little different according to you know most standards, you know, I'm just just like, you know, each and every one of you," he said to students.
Parker has been working at the school for a few months. He allowed them to ask questions and gave an insight into his everyday life and how he does things without being able to see, one being the use of the Braille writing system.
"Braille is a way that blind people can actually read," said Parker. "You can use your eyes to read, look at letters, and say, 'Oh that's a H, that's I, that's whatever.' With Braille, I have to actually feel the dots."
Fifth grader Rowan Wilson has a speech disability and is eager to learn more about Braille.
"I stutter a lot," said Wilson. "I would want to learn."
Parker said it's important to give an insight into all sorts of conditions and teach kids at a young age to be kind. Overall he hopes students take away one important message.
"Everyone has some sort of impairment. All people are different," said Parker.
For those who may have a disability, he hopes they get encouraged and inspired to reach for success.
"No matter what type of impairment you have, you can, in a sense, if you have the tenacity or if you have the ability or the drive, you can overcome whatever you have. Because with technology and whatnot, there shouldn't be a reason for you to not be able to be successful," he said.
