'It feels good': DC's youngest Snow Team Heroes shovel for senior neighbors

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) -- Volunteers across the District were working hard to help their neighbors shovel snow and spread salt after Monday's snowstorm.
Some of those volunteers - the "Snow Team Heroes" - spent their day off from school giving back to their neighbors in Southeast D.C.
A group of young boys showed up at Rosalind Dunmore's doorstep to shovel for her Tuesday afternoon.
"This is a lifesaver, trust me. We're not able to due to health issues, we can't do it ourselves," said Dunmore.
How long do I have to clear sidewalks of snow and ice?
The boys who came to her aid are in elementary and middle school, volunteering as DC Snow Team Heroes with the organization Young Knowledgeable Men, Inc.
"It's encouraging to see them out here," said Dunmore.
11-year-old Kareem told DC News Now it felt really good to give back.
"It's good to be giving back to the community. They're older, their bodies don't have the strength. It's hard for them to do it, so we're out here doing it for them," said Kareem.
"Teaching them that value - the value of giving - is so important because it empowers them. Instead of all the bad things they see all day, we teach them these values," said Young Knowledgeable Men, Inc. founder Quentin Milner.
Serve DC and the Snow Team Heroes are searching for more help, too as more than 1,000 Washingtonians put in requests for snow removal this week.
"There's such a big need for it. We're still getting calls on from seniors, especially, who need help, who can't shovel themselves out. We really need volunteers," said Dominique A. Scott, director of Serve DC.
