Merced CHP adds new unit to patrol since '70s

MERCED, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - Merced California Highway Patrol will now have motorcycle units and they say it will be for the first time since the '70s.
The agency announced Tuesday a motor squad will be added to the Merced Area Office to improve mobility and response capabilities.
Officials say the addition of motorcycle officers allows them to have better accessibility in areas where traditional patrol vehicles are limited, such as commuting through traffic amid disasters and crashes.
“Our new motor squad will play a crucial role in community safety, as they enforce laws, prevent traffic crashes, and swiftly respond to emergencies,” said CHP Merced Area Commander Antonio Dominguez. “I am confident their presence will contribute to our department’s mission of saving lives.”
CHP says the three officers and one sergeant will be a part of the nearly 400 other motor units throughout the state.
All motor officers must pass a two-week training course at the CHP Academy where half of the applicants do not pass. Anyone interested in applying can find more information here.
