SF Bay Ferry to make beer and wine available on morning commute
Jan 07, 2025
SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- The two-martini lunch may be dead but starting this week, if you want to order a beer on your morning commute, you'll be able to onboard the SF Bay Ferry. On Monday, the ferry service began opening all snack bars onboard all ferries on all routes and on all trips across the system throughout the day.
The expanded service, which comes on the heels of the ferry contracting a new concessionaire, unfortunately marks the end of the ferry's free coffee in the mornings.
"In lieu of free coffee, all trips now offer a snack bar with premium coffee as well as expanded food and drink items for purchase," the ferry said in a post on its website.

While free coffee is out, the expanded concessions now include "high quality coffee," expanded snack offerings, and bars that will be open on all trips, all day -- yes, that means even the 6:30 a.m. Alameda Seaplane departure, if you were wondering.
The expanded service is apparently being rolled out gradually to eventually include all trips on all routes.
"We're pleased to offer the same great selection of alcoholic beverages on our ferries, coming soon to all routes!" the ferry service said. "Whether you're unwinding after a long day or celebrating with friends, please remember to enjoy responsibly."
Currently, bars are only open on some afternoon trips on some routes. But the ferry service said it is "excited to bring this amenity to all riders every day!"
Alcoholic offerings look set to remain the same as they currently are with beer, wine and select mixed drinks and liquor available. In addition to coffee, non-alcoholic options will include sodas, juices and water.
Snack options onboard are also set to remain the same, with the addition of "more healthy options to choose from," according to the ferry. Candy, chips and freshly baked goods will be available, but it's unclear what exactly the expanded healthy options will be.
Prices, which have already gone up slightly since the ferry changed concessionaires, "may vary depending on the item," according to the ferry.
On Monday, the SF Bay Ferry announced a 16% ridership gain in 2024.
