SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- Crime in San Francisco is at a 20-year low, according to figures released by outgoing Mayor London Breed's office on Tuesday. SF has seen a "historic" drop in homicides and car break-ins, Breed's office said. The city, according to a press release from Breed's office, has made "historic gains confronting major crime trends." Property crime in SF is down 31% year-over-year from 2023 and down 46% from 2017. Violent crime saw a 14% drop last year compared to the year before and is down 26% from 2017. Overall crime in San Francisco in 2024 was at its lowest point since 2001, when the city saw a historic low in crime rates. San Francisco reported 4,739 violent crimes in 2024 and 30,991 property crimes. In 2001, by comparison, the city saw 4,528 violent crimes and 24,770 property crimes. "I'm grateful for the hard work by our law enforcement partners and everyone in the community working tirelessly to make our neighborhoods safer," said Mayor Breed. "This shows that when we give our officers the tools and support, like we have with new technology, they can deliver incredible results." "These historically low crime rates are proof that the hard work of our officers is paying off," said San Francisco Police Chief Bill Scott. "Our department is short staffed, and many other officers were working overtime to meet San Francisco's public safety needs. Even with these challenges, our officers delivered." "I would like to thank Mayor Breed and the San Francisco Police Department for their tireless efforts to keep our city safe," said SF District Attorney Brooke Jenkins. "Although there is still more work to be done, the improving crime rates show that we're moving in the right direction."
