TOPEKA (KSNT) - City of Topeka and State of Kansas government office workers are due to return to their respective workplaces on Wednesday. Governor Laura Kelly announced in a press release on Jan. 7 that she is ordering state offices in Shawnee County to reopen on Jan. 8 following a blizzard which made travel through the area treacherous. Offices were previously ordered to shut down in the county. “Thanks to the hard work of crews, roadway conditions have improved, and state offices will resume normal operations on Wednesday,” Kelly said. “Please exercise caution when traveling and continue to give crews the necessary space as they keep working to clear roadways. We appreciate our first responders, medical professionals, public works crews, and all who are working to ensure the safe re-opening of our state throughout this weather event.”  Non-essential state employees in executive branch agencies under the governor's jurisdiction are set to return to work as they normally would. These employees are still set to have Thursday, Jan. 9 off this week to mourn the loss of former President Jimmy Carter.
