CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - People in Massachusetts who have crumbling concrete were hoping for legislation to pass that would help them pay to get a new foundation, but the bill failed. A bill that would have created a committee to address how the state can help homeowners whose foundations are crumbling did not make it past the deadline for this year's legislative session. The state Senate passed the bill last Monday however, the House failed to follow up on the bill before the legislative session expired. Gov. Healey responds to homeowners with crumbling concrete This legislation is so important to these homeowners because of how costly a crumbling foundation repair is. A repair costs hundreds of thousands of dollars and is not covered by insurance. Homes with this issue are deemed worthless and getting a loan for the work is nearly impossible. State Senator Peter Durant who is one of the sponsors of the bill says anyone who has seen the problem caused by crumbling foundations can understand the urgency. In a statement, he said "It is extremely disappointing that our colleagues in the House have let down the residents of Massachusetts who are struggling to keep their homes. Anyone who has seen the devastation caused by crumbling foundations can understand the urgent need for this legislation." Now the legislation will have to be re-filed in the upcoming legislative session.
