More snow moves into New Mexico through Thursday with bitterly cold wind chills
Jan 07, 2025
A winter storm will continue to bring snow to parts of New Mexico through Thursday. Dangerously cold wind chills will continue into Wednesday morning.
Snow has been falling across northern New Mexico since late last night, with some light snowfall accumulations. This has been enough to bring a few slick spots to some roadways in northern New Mexico. Light snow continues to fall in norther parts of the state Tuesday evening. A strong east wind is along and west of the Rio Grande Valley, with the strongest winds in the Albuquerque Metro. Winds have been gusting up to 40 mph so far today, with gusts up to 55 mph possible through late tonight. This will bring wind chills down to as low as the single digits through Wednesday morning.
Other areas across western, central, and southern New Mexico will also see wind chills dip down into the single digits and even below-zero by Wednesday morning. Snow will also come to an end across northern New Mexico tonight, while more snow develops across southern parts of the state and will bring scattered snow showers and flurries to areas south of I-40. We'll actually see a break from the snow and rain in most of New Mexico Wednesday afternoon, but high temperatures will stay below freezing for much of the state.
More snow will start developing in southern New Mexico Wednesday night, especially along the Mexico border and Texas state line. This could cause some icy roads and accumulating snowfall into Thursday morning. More snow will develop Thursday afternoon across southern and eastern New Mexico with isolated snow showers in central and northern parts of the state. With breezy winds Thursday afternoon, this could cause areas of blowing snow, especially in eastern New Mexico. Light, but widespread snow will continue through Thursday night until the snow begins to wrap up Friday morning.
Temperatures will stay very cold Friday afternoon all across New Mexico. This means that any snow that has fallen will still be on the ground and roadways. Snowfall accumulations are still going to remain fairly light across the state, with areas seeing a dusting to 2" at most. 3" to 5"+ of snow will be likely in the southern mountains though.
Warmer weather briefly returns on Saturday as some parts of the state will finally climb back above freezing for the first time in over two days. Another storm will clip New Mexico on Sunday though, bringing cooler temperatures once again and even snow chances to northern New Mexico. The cooler air will continue to stick around into early next week.
