Mitt Stewart and his partner Katy have been hosting the Wasatch Trail Run Series in the summers around the Wasatch Mountains for the last 13 years. The summer series features short and long course races at Soldier Hollow, Brighton and Snowbird on Wednesday nights. This winter, Stewart and Katy decided they’d be putting on a winter race, the Winter Trail Fest. The race will be held Saturday morning at Round Valley in Park City, featuring short and long distance fat tire bike and trail running races. Jennifer Cherland tests out the fat tire biking trail at Round Valley. Registration is still open on the race’s website and will cost $55 for runners and $65 for bikers. “We’ve had this idea of putting on this winter trail event because I’m also a mountain biker,” said Stewart. “It all just came together a month ago.”Stewart had to get the approval from city officials to put on the race. The race was originally scheduled for last Saturday, but they postponed, fearing a larger winter storm. The weather Saturday morning should see temperatures in the high teens and clouds. “The idea is pretty unique,” added Stewart. “There’s not an event that we know of here that does both a winter trail run and a fat biking event, and so we thought it would be great to do.”If Stewart and Katy see success, they’d love to expand the winter events in the future. Stewart has interest in adding a cross country skiing race. The short running course Saturday is four miles and the long seven. The short biking course is 8 miles and the long 15. Stewart described the bikes necessary for racing in the winter as having a similar setup to mountain bikes, but with even fatter tires. “We’re anticipating around 200 people,” said Stewart. “A short and long course, pretty much accommodates all abilities.”The race is being held in Park City to target locals who run and bike throughout the snowy winters. Stewart believes it could inspire some new to the sports to find passion for them and the extensive local trail system. If people know a volunteer, the volunteer can hand them a registration code to enter a race. Otherwise, Wasatch Trail Run will donate the possible $60 entry fee to Mountain Trails, which helps upkeep the trail system across Park City. All participants Saturday will receive either a custom race beanie or tumbler cup, in addition to finisher medals. For further information on the races like trail maps, trail elevation and starting points, circle back to the event’s website. The post Wasatch Trail Run hosting winter biking, running race  appeared first on Park Record.
