Providence homicide victim was beloved father, brother

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Malaysia King will never forget Thanksgiving 2024.
That's because there was a notably empty seat at the dinner table.
Her brother, 49-year-old Keith Singleton, had been shot and killed while working on his car the weekend prior.
"It's so hard to wrap your head around losing your sibling so brutally," King said. "It makes time feel like it's at a stand still, because you feel like you're waiting for someone to come home who's never going to show up."

Singleton, who was one of nine siblings, regularly stopped by the family house to make sure everyone was alright, according to King. She described Singleton as being her "protector" growing up, since the two had a roughly 16-year age gap between them.
"He was like a second dad to me," King explained. "He was there every single day."
King said preparing for Thanksgiving was especially hard for the family, especially since Singleton "always had input" on the menu and his favorite foods differed drastically from everyone else.
"Walking by those foods in the grocery store and not buying them only because he wasn't going to be with us was really difficult," she said.
Officers found Singleton off of Monticello Street suffering from several gunshot wounds. He was rushed to Rhode Island Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
King said Singleton wasn't just a devoted sibling and son. He was also a loving husband and a doting father to his six children, three of which are under the age of 18. He was also the beloved grandfather of one granddaughter and three grandsons.
"His three older kids are adults, but his three younger kids really still need him," she explained.
Her message to her brother's killer is clear.
"I want them to understand that they didn't just hurt one person when they did this," King said. "He has a large family ... They hurt so many generations of people."
Investigators believe Singleton was targeted, but his killer hasn't been caught. Detectives are now searching for a person of interest seen on surveillance footage walking near where Singleton was shot and killed that night.
King is urging anyone with information to come forward to bring them some closure.
"It's hard to sleep at night when you don't know who did this," King said. "We need justice and he deserves justice."
Anyone who can identify the person of interest is asked to contact Detective Alicia Hersperger at (401) 527-8988 of Detective Matt Nadeau at (401) 659-5964.
