PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — The Pawtucket man accused of stealing a Providence police cruiser and taking it on a joyride into Connecticut over the weekend had been escorted out of Rhode Island Hospital moments prior, according to a police report obtained by 12 News. Jared Remson, 27, allegedly drove off with the cruiser, which was parked outside the hospital, early Saturday morning. The police report states that officers escorted Remson out of the building after he became "combative" and was throwing chairs in the emergency waiting room. Officers were simultaneously assisting another man into the emergency waiting room as Remson was being removed from the hospital, police said. Surveillance footage reviewed by police reportedly showed Remson looking around briefly before hopping into the empty cruiser and taking off. BACKGROUND: Man accused of driving off with police cruiser outside RI Hospital It took approximately five minutes for the officer, identified in the police report as patrolwoman Mendez, to realize her cruiser was missing. The police report states that Mendez immediately notified her captain, who issued an alert to surrounding departments. Police tracked the cruiser's location using Mendez's cell phone, which she had left inside the car. Connecticut State Police then spotted the cruiser crossing the state line on I-95 South about an hour later. But when they attempted to pull Remson over, he sped off. Troopers pursued the vehicle off the highway into Groton, where Remson turned onto Route 117, reaching speeds over 100 mph at times, according to police. Police said Ledyard officers successfully deployed stop sticks near where Route 117 intersects with Route 2A. Remson was taken into custody without incident after the cruiser slowed to a stop on Route 2A near Hope Fuller Road. The cruiser was towed to the Montville Barracks with damage to the front and rear passenger side tires, police said. Remson remains in custody in Connecticut after failing to post $50,000 cash bond. He's facing several charges, including first-degree larceny, reckless driving and engaging police in a pursuit. Remson was scheduled to be arraigned on Tuesday, but his court appearance was postponed until Feb. 4. He will also face additional charges out of Rhode Island pending extradition.
