10 On Your Side Success: Chesapeake women to have heat again
Jan 07, 2025
CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — Gloria Simms and her 99-year-old aunt had not had heat in her home for the past year, and it was only after speaking up at church that anyone knew about it.
Now, after Simms' story aired on 10 On Your Side Monday, she and her aunt are on their way to having heat again, with the Hampton Roads community stepping up to help out in a big way.
Elderly Chesapeake women have lived without heat for a year
"I just turned the news on and I saw this story and I just thought, there's something I could do to help,” said Jon Shaffer of Shaffer Heating and Cooling.
After 10 On Your Side aired the story, Pastor Edwin Goodwin of Alpha and Omega Baptist Fellowship Church received more than a dozen calls, one of those from Shaffer, and Shaffer was out at Simms' home Tuesday.
“Somebody removed the boiler, which provided their heat and their hot water, and then they put in a hot water heater," Shaffer said. "So by doing that, it kind of removed their heat."
There were other issues as well, and simply replacing parts would just be a short-term solution, he said. So instead, Shaffer is replacing the entire heating system — for free.
"I'm just overwhelmed with what has happened the last couple of days here in this home,” Simms said.
Goodwin fielded several calls Monday night, and even more during an interview Tuesday. He said this is a prayer answered. The home was built by Simms' father as a 50th wedding anniversary gift to her mother. Passing it on to the 84-year-old Simms, she wants to honor their memory.
"This is what this home is about," Simms said. "It's about love, helping people and just being kind,” Simms said.
"I've watched the tears from her eyes this morning — we're grateful," Goodwin said. And thank you Ashley, and thank you, WAVY-TV 10 for giving us an opportunity to reach out to the community. This is what community service is all about."
"And I'm very thankful to everyone that's here today to see us through this struggle," Simms said, "and I will ever be so grateful to all of you. If you ever need a good homecooked meal, [hit] me up!"
Shaffer will have an electrician come out later in the week and hopes to have heat going again by Monday.
Goodwin said if you’d like to make a monetary donation, it will still be put to good use by Simms. You can contact him at 757-639-0183.
