Virginia Beach city to vote on wetlands restoration project

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) -- On Tuesday, the Virginia Beach City Council will consider whether or not to move forward with a project that would redevelop eight acres of woods back into tidal wetlands.
Before the 1970s, the area in question was originally wetlands before dredge material was placed over it between 1971-1972, according to the city's website. In 2012, the city of Virginia Beach and partners preserved Pleasure House Point, protecting it from potential development.

The city says the $12 million effort would not only return the wetlands — but help provide wetland credits for other flood prevention projects citywide.
However, the effort isn't without controversy. Some are upset that thousands of trees could be removed in the process. Students in the Environmental Studies program are conducting a tree count to determine the number of trees impacted.
The city did say they plan to plant over 600 trees, including 336 Live Oaks and 192 Water Oaks.
