(WEHT) - Evansville Police charged a man for animal neglect after an officer had to shoot and kill a dog at a home in the 600 block of College Highway.
According to Evansville Police, officers assisted Evansville Animal Care and Control at the home on January 6 at approximately 12:45 p.m. as part of an investigation into inadequate housing of an outdoor dog. According to a release, Animal Control had previously responded to the home 16 times over similar neglect concerns.
Police say a large dog was being housed in an open-air style kennel with a tarp wrapped around two sides. There was reportedly a frozen bowl of water present in the kennel and the temperature at the time of removal was 24 degrees.
Officers say they spent approximately 30 minutes at the scene attempting to safely remove the dog. The dog's owner was instructed to leash the dog and walk it to the Animal Control vehicle. However, authorities say while the owner was attempting to leash the dog, it began to run toward one of the officers.
Authorities say the dog's approach escalated into aggressive behavior, including jumping up with its mouth open in an attacking manner very close to the officer.
In response to the dog's attack, the officer fired his handgun three times at the dog. Police say the dog succumbed to its injuries.
The owner of the dog was issued a citation for animal neglect. Police say the investigation is ongoing, and additional charges may be considered as the case progresses.
