Person injured in police shooting in Miami County, Indiana PERU, Ind. (WISH) — A police shooting Tuesday morning at a trailer in a wooded area north of Peru left one person injured, Indiana State Police say. A news release issued Tuesday afternoon from Indiana State Police did not identify the person who was shot, or the Indiana State Police officer who shot the person. The person shot was being treated at a hospital in the Fort Wayne area, but the person’s condition was not shared in the release. No one else was hurt. State police say the trooper who shot the person was put on administrative leave. A 911 caller shortly after 8:30 a.m. Tuesday alerted police to a person banging on the windows at a home on State Road 19 north of U.S. 24 in Miami County. The intersection is on the north end of Peru. The release says officers arrived at the home to find the person who’d reportedly been banging on the windows. Information from that person led officers to what was described as “a nearby trailer” in the 1600 block of State Road 19. That block is about a 2-minute drive north of the intersection of U.S. 24 and State Road 19. Officer approaching the trailer found a person outside it who had a firearm. When the person “brandished a firearm toward law enforcement,” that’s when the trooper fired and hit the person, the release said. Investigators later collected a firearm from in front of the trailer. Two other people exited the trailer after a hostage negotiator talked with them. One of them, Tisha Medina, had an active warrant from Cass County on a low-level felony charge involving methamphetamine, and two lesser drug counts involving marijuana and paraphernalia. State police say their investigation of the shooting was in the preliminary stages Tuesday afternoon.
