MADISON, Wis. (WFRV) - The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) invites residents to take pride in the outdoors with winter candlelight events throughout the state.
According to a release from the DNR, the events are low-cost, or sometimes free and they begin around sunset with multiple ways to enjoy the outdoor scenery in the wintertime.

"Winter candlelight events are some of the most popular activities at Wisconsin state parks, forests, trails and wildlife areas," Steve Schmelzer, the DNR Parks and Recreation Management Director said.
Schmelzer added that it's difficult to stay outdoors and active during the coldest parts of the year; however, these events offer a new way to experience the state's outdoor beauty.
These events often offer hiking, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing, depending on the weather conditions. These events sometimes offer bonfires, hot chocolate, cider and other winter-themed items for sale or via donation. Some also host open-warming shelters.
No experience is required for those wishing to hike or go snowshoeing, as they invite first-timers to enjoy non-committal opportunities to meet others. Warm and layered clothing is recommended, and while trekking poles are optional, lighting tools are highly encouraged.
