El Paso City Council begins year with new faces

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) -- El Paso City Council representatives were at City Hall Tuesday morning, Jan. 7 to begin their official duties after being sworn in Monday night.
The council has five new representatives and three returning members. Mayor Renard Johnson also assumed office, taking the reins over from Oscar Leeser, who served two non-consecutive terms.
New members:
Mayor: Renard Johnson
District 1: Alejandra Chávez
District 3: Deanna Maldonado Rocha
District 4: Cynthia Boyar Trejo
District 5: Ivan Niño
District 7: Lily Limón
Returning members:
District 2: Josh Acevedo
District 6: Art Fierro
District 8: Chris Canales
To begin Tuesday’s meeting, the council elected its new mayor pro tempore and alternate mayor pro tempore.
After being nominated by Johnson, representatives unanimously approved Chávez to serve as mayor pro tem with Fierro assuming the alternate role.
The regular session lasted less than one hour and was followed by a mass transportation meeting. The general call to the public was held at noon where only one community member spoke before the first meeting was adjourned.
