EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) -- Marine Corps 1st Sgt. Candice Puente, an El Paso native, is standing guard along the casket of former President Jimmy Carter as his body is transported to Washington for his memorial services, according to the El Paso Independent School District.
Puente, a graduate of Irvin High School in El Paso, has served in the military for 19 years.
On Tuesday, Jan. 7, Puente, along with three other Marines, will stand guard alongside the casket of Carter.
"This solemn duty reflects Puente's dedication and excellence throughout nearly two decades of service in the Marine Corps. Serving as a ceremonial guard for a former president is one of the highest honors bestowed upon military personnel, and it underscores the trust and respect she has earned within her ranks," EPISD said.
Carter died on Dec. 29 at the age of 100.
The memorial services in Washington, D.C., are expected to draw national and international attention.
"Puente’s assignment to this solemn responsibility is a source of pride not only for her family and friends but also for the Irvin High School community and El Paso, where her journey began. Her exemplary service and recognition in this moment highlight the values of discipline, integrity, and commitment that she carries with her as both a Marine and an alumna of Irvin High," EPISD said.
