(COLORADO SPRINGS) — Local to Colorado Springs, HollowBrook Dental is changing the shape of dentistry. "The mission statement is to improve the oral health of all our patients," Dr. Jim Grant said.

Dr. Grant invented a new dental implant that he hopes will be used in every dental office around the world. Instead of using the standard round titanium screw used in 80% of implants, Grant invented a rectangular screw that he says fits better.
"Our invention is unique [and not just to the United States] but worldwide. There's no one else," Dr. Grant said. "What we're wanting to do with that, is to basically improve the oral health of everybody through our innovation, making it easier for labs, hygienists, general dentists, particularly the patients, to have a better experience when they end up with one of our implants."

After a dozen patents and case studies, Dr. Grant received FDA approval about two years ago. Working with local oral surgeon, Dr. Bradley Renehan, over 65 patients have received the new implants.
"We have seen most of those 65 back and we are doing some subjective and objective data collecting. And by far they've told us that this is like a natural tooth," Dr. Renehan said. "It's not trapping food, which was a big problem with the round ones."
The procedures are done at the office of Dr. Lee Smith, a general dentist who constructs the crowns.

"So that's my job. I restore the implant once the neurosurgeon puts it in the correct position," Dr. Smith said. "It is now up to me and my team to properly restore the rest of the tooth, a crown, and that's evolved into these very natural looking and even better natural feeling replaced molars or replaced teeth."
One of Dr. Smith's patients, John Morris, agrees. He says he's had his share of dental work and the new implants are far better than what he's received in the past.
"Having an implant is not particularly fun," Morris admitted. "If I was going to have another one, I'd absolutely do the same thing... Day by day, I have no thought of it. It just feels normal. It's easy. It's easy to keep clean. It seems as good or better than my normal teeth."
Dr. Grant knows they work because he was the first patient to receive one two years ago.
"I think it's going to improve the profession, the patient's outcome, and it's just a healthier solution for everybody."
And that will put a smile on any patient's face.
