Everyday Hero: Freezin' for a reason
Jan 07, 2025
SULLIVAN'S ISLAND, S.C. (WCBD) – It started thirty years ago when a couple of guys were sitting at a bar on New Year's Day and decided to take a jump in the ocean as a way to cleanse themselves going into the New Year.
What that first plunge turned into is now known as Dunleavy's Polar Plunge, which raises money for a very special cause.
"Oh my gosh, what a way to start off the new year."
Patrons started packing the pub early on New Year's Day, refreshing themselves on a pint or two of liquid courage for what was to come. With creative costumes and smiling faces, participants gathered to celebrate the 30th year of Dunleavy's plunge.
"And the sun is shining, there's a smile on everybody's face, it's a great cause, and it's a fun day," said Bill Dunleavy, creator of Dunleavy's Polar Plunge.
They didn't start freezing for a reason until a few years after the plunge began, the reason being the South Carolina Special Olympics. As of 2024, over $600,000 has been donated to the local athletes.
"It really helps us a lot to get down to the games and to celebrate and follow our dreams," said Trista Kutcher, a special Olympics athlete.
"All of the sports that she does are really being funded by everyone's donations here, so it really means a lot to us, right," said Kathy Rogers, a polar plunge participant.
The excitement continued to build on the sunny New Year's Day as participants made their way from the pub to the beach.
When the countdown reached zero, thousands of brave souls ran to the water, which was a cool 50 degrees.
Young or old, it was a great way to ring in the New Year and continue to support the South Carolina Special Olympics.
"We have a mission to make sports available at no cost to our athletes, and events like this make that possible," said Sandye Williams with the SC Special Olympics.
Over 14,000 people took the plunge to kick off 2025, and the total monetary donation numbers will be released in the coming days.
