BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) -- The newest member of the Berkeley County Council and two returning members were sworn into office Monday night.
Sheriff Duane Lewis administered the oath to District 1 Councilman Dan Owens and District 3 Councilman Phillip Obie II, both of whom won reelection in the Nov. 5 election. Newly-elected District 2 Councilman Jarrod Brooks was sworn in by his parents.
In short remarks after taking his oath, Brooks thanked his colleagues for welcoming him onto the council and said he was ready to get to work.
"I'm very proud to be part of the team," Brooks said. "I think this council is very like-minded with me that good government looks like responsiveness and transparency, accountability and accessibility...so let's get to work."
The start of the new term also came with a change in leadership.
As part of Tuesday's organizational session, Owens was elected to serve as the nine-member body's next Vice Chair, replacing Obie.
"Your dedication and sacrifices made for this elected body is appreciated and the support you provide is invaluable to each meeting and to the council office as a whole," Owens said as he presented Obie with a ceremonial gavel. "On both a professional and a personal level, I am grateful for your efforts to make this council run smoothly and effectively."
"As you pass the torch, I take this role with pride and excitement for the foundation we built together is strong," he continued.
County Supervisor and Council Chairman Johnny Cribb presided over the proceedings, during which members also received their committee assignments.
