BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — A Baton Rouge man has been indicted on federal charges accusing him of selling drugs that caused the death of one person and seriously injured another, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
A grand jury returned a two-count indictment against 33-year-old Ecknozzio C. Jackson, Jr., charging him with the distribution of heroin and fentanyl resulting in death and serious bodily injury. Jackson pled not guilty to the charges during his arraignment on Jan. 2.
Court documents allege that on December 16, 2019, Jackson distributed a substance containing heroin to an individual, who later sustained serious bodily injury after ingesting it. The next day, Jackson reportedly sold a substance containing heroin and fentanyl to another individual, resulting in their death.
Each count in the indictment carries a mandatory minimum prison sentence of 20 years, with the possibility of life imprisonment.
This case is being investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office. It is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Paul L. Pugliese.
Note: An indictment is a formal accusation by a grand jury. The defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
