BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) -- A man who threatened and swung a wine bottle at a security guard at a Stockdale Highway shopping center was sentenced Tuesday to eight years in prison, according to court records. Rodney Rusco, 55, was found guilty last year of assault with a deadly weapon and an attempted threat for his actions at the Town & Country Village Shopping Center. Rusco has a lengthy criminal history, including a felony vandalism conviction in 2023 for an incident where he caused $10,000 in damage and yelled racial slurs at employees of a Burger King in Bakersfield. On Aug. 10, a security guard asked Rusco to leave after finding him loitering outside businesses and drinking wine from a bottle at the Town and Country Village Shopping Center, prosecutors said. Rusco, who is homeless, swore and refused to leave. Rusco rushed the security guard and swung the bottle at his head. The bottle didn't connect, but Rusco's wrist hit the guard's forearm, prosecutors said. Police arrived and Rusco was arrested. He still had the bottle and knife on him.
