Thursday storm brings soaking rain and limited icing
Jan 07, 2025
AUSTIN (KXAN) -- After yet another widespread freeze, we've seen sunshine along with scattered clouds warm us only into the middle and upper 40s today.
Despite a gradual increase in clouds tonight, there will be enough clear sky to allow for another widespread freeze by Wednesday morning.
Winter weather preps discussed at public safety meeting
Wednesday
Wednesday looks mostly cloudy and dry with the exception being a few flurries or sprinkles that won't cause any issues. Temperatures have trended slightly warmer so we've pushed highs into the low to mid 40s with only a little sun between the clouds.
Wednesday's forecast
Wednesday evening remains cloudy, but mainly dry until after midnight.
Storm on Thursday
The last 24-hours we've seen a noticeable shift toward a slower and warmer storm and that means less wintry weather and more of a cold rain.
Thursday morning will see the arrival of scattered showers for most areas along with some wintry mix showers in the Hill Country where some spotty freezing on elevated surfaces will be possible.
Thursday morning: Wintry mix of sleet or freezing rain is in pink
As we head through the day the rain will get more widespread and we'll see the wintry mix areas shrinking.
Thursday afternoon: Wintry mix of sleet or freezing rain is in pink
It will be a cold rain with temperatures staying in the 30s all day, but the rain will be much easier to deal with for most of us than the wintry weather that looked more likely earlier this week.
Rainfall amounts look healthy with many of us picking up close to 1" with areas east of I-35 likely to get even more.
Rain forecast through early Friday
Snowfall amounts look very limited aside from some coatings in the northern Hill Country. More of us may see some flakes mix in, but very few will see accumulation.
Snow forecast through early Friday
As far as ice accretion the Hill Country is the area most likely to see limited icing, but less than 0.05" in most areas. Spotty icing is possible in parts of the Austin Metro, mainly in the western metro Thursday morning.
Ice accretion forecast through early Friday
Friday and the Weekend
Any lingering precipitation will be gone by mid-morning Friday with temperatures heading deeper into the 40s in the afternoon.
Temperatures this weekend head for the 50s and 60s before our next cold front arrives later on Sunday to knock us down a little bit.
