AUSTIN (KXAN) -- A north Austin church is opening its doors to people experiencing homelessness overnight as temperatures drop to dangerous levels in Austin. They started Monday night and will continue through Thursday night. St. Mark United Methodist Church is working with some of its neighbors and Austin Mutual Aid to make the overnight shelter happen. Austin Mutual Aid already does extreme weather support, outreach and transport. "We have so many unhoused neighbors and neighbors that are struggling and we know that there's not a lot up here in this area, and so our mission is to really serve the one mile radius around us," said Ashley Cuellar, pastor of St. Mark United Methodist Church. The church is offering a meal to people, along with warm clothes, blankets and other resources provided by Austin Mutual Aid and others who donated. There are separate spaces in the church for men and women. Pets can also stay as long as they are crated. "Our heart was that people, neighbors on the street or neighbors suffering, could come to this place that they know already and have a relationship with," Cuellar said. Those seeking shelter can go to 601 W. Braker Lane starting at 6 p.m. Doors will be locked from 9 p.m. until 6 a.m., and folks are asked to leave by 9 a.m. For more information, those interested can call (512) 763-5033.
