Seattle cop who struck and killed grad student with cruiser fired

A Seattle officer who hit and killed an Indian grad student with a police cruiser in 2023 has been fired.
Interim Seattle police chief Sue Rahr announced Monday that Kevin Dave was fired over the Jan. 23, 2023 incident where Jaahnavi Kandula was killed when the former officer sped through a crosswalk.
Rahr said Dave violated multiple department policies, including failing to use emergency lights during an emergency response and not safely operating a patrol vehicle.
“I believe the officer did not intend to hurt anyone that night and that he was trying to get to a possible overdose victim as quickly as possible,” Rahr wrote in an email to the department. “However, I cannot accept the tragic consequences of his dangerous driving. His positive intent does not mitigate the poor decision that caused the loss of a human life and brought discredit to the Seattle Police Department.”
King County prosecutors said in February 2024 that Dave would not face charges after determining he was not impaired or driving recklessly despite he was driving as fast as 74 mph when he struck Kandula. He was ticketed for second-degree negligent driving by the Seattle City Attorney’s Office. He was fined $5,000 and must complete an eight-hour traffic safety course and 40 hours of community service.
Footage of officer Daniel Auderer, vice president of the Seattle Police Officers Guild, laughing off the woman’s death drew international condemnation and led to his firing in July 2024.
The family of Kandula, a 23-year-old studying at Northeastern University, filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the city and Dave in September 2024 and is seeking damages of $110 million.
