Crop comments: Brush’s annihilation of Canton McKinley further solidifies its spot as the coverage area’s top team. It’s early, but is it too early to start thinking about the Arcs as a threat to maybe contend for a Division III state title? … Gilmour remains No. 2 despite having a losing record. Look at who the Lancers play — whew. They could/should get back on track with games against Akron Hoban, Villa Angela-St. Joseph and Glenville this week. … Richmond Heights stays at No. 3. The Spartans have been idle since Dec. 29. A game against No. 5 Chagrin Falls this week is a biggie. … Mentor moves up to No. 4. The Cardinals have won three in a row heading into this week when they play Strongsville, Brunswick and then Cornerstone Christian on Jan. 20. … Chagrin’s win over Riverside puts the Tigers at No. 5. The Tigers are not real tall, but are relentless on defense. … Riverside at No. 6 is bolstered by a win over Mayfield. A week of Kenston, North and West Geauga games awaits the Beavers. … Cornerstone is 9-1, with its only loss being by three points to Lake Catholic. The Patriots have a busy week with games against Lutheran West, Cleveland JFK and NDCL. They should be favored in all three. … Mayfield is No. 8. Three WRC games against South, Chardon and Kenston this week will be good tests for the Wildcats. … Perry checks in at No. 9. The Pirates lost to Mentor, but rebounded with a two-point win over Madison. The Jan. 15 game at Richmond Heights is a key game for both teams. … Lake Catholic is No. 10. The Cougars are on a three-game losing streak with games against Kirtland, Padua and VASJ coming up.
