Jan 07, 2025
WASHINGTON (DC News Now) -- Officials are investigating a fire that left two cats dead and two people displaced on Tuesday morning.
In a post on the X platform around 8:19 a.m. on Jan. 7, the DC Fire and EMS Department (DCFD) said crews were called to a box alarm in the 4300 block of Varnum Place.
Upon arrival, firefighters were met with heavy flames coming from a two-story home and its attic.

About 40 minutes later, DCFD said the blaze was out, but crews were still monitoring hotspots.
Two people were displaced but they were not injured during the incident.
The fire came a day after a winter storm blasted across D.C., leaving several inches of snow and low frigid temperatures.
As a result, D.C. crews battled the fire in extreme weather conditions.
Currently, it is unknown what caused the fire to break out inside the home.
