Hastings resident Murilo Romão, who was diagnosed with leukemia in October, recently reached his fundraising goal of $50,000 with the help of a famous actor.
Actress Kristen Bell
Minnesota residents of eight years, Romão and his wife Alana are self-employed and do not have health insurance, so they turned to their community for help, launching a GoFundMe that met its goal last week thanks to a $24,182 donation from actor Kristen Bell.
Described as caring, funny and hard-working, 36-year-old Romão is “always ready to help others when needed.” The couple, who immigrated from Brazil, are out of work and “focusing all their energy into beating this disease,” according to the fundraising page.
“As you know, we do not have health insurance,” Alana Dos Santos Zaia Romão wrote in a Dec. 27 update. “The bills have started to arrive and we have already reached 500k in hospital debt.”
Bell, known for her roles in “The Good Place” and “Veronica Mars,” is collaborating with internet star Tommy Marcus, known on Instagram as Quentin Quarantino, to promote health-related GoFundMe pages, according to a spokesperson for the fundraising site.
