HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Henrico leaders are scheduled to provide an update on water pressure issues facing certain areas at a press conference on Tuesday. Officials with the Henrico Department of Public Utilities (DPU) were joined by other county leaders to discuss water pressure issues facing the region around 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 7. County Manager John Vithoulkas began with an apology to any and all residents who have been affected by the issue. He also emphasized that the county's water was safe to drink and only the water pressure was affected -- unlike the water issues the City of Richmond is facing. According to Vithoulkas, the issues arose after Richmond contacted them about a temporary failure at the city's water treatment plant. While Henrico officials reportedly acted quickly to disconnect their water system from Richmond's and reroute to their own water treatment plant, Vithoulkas said it took a number of hours for them to receive information from Richmond and they could not act as quickly as they wanted to. Later that night -- or early Tuesday morning -- after switching the county's water system over, there was a major water main break in the area of Highland Springs. Vithoulkas described it as "the straw that broke the camel's back." According to officials, Henrico DPU staff are currently working to repair the water main break and it is expected to be fixed later Tuesday afternoon. Vithoulkas said the pressure issues are only affecting residents east of Interstate 95 at the moment and it is unknown exactly how many people are affected. In addition to working on repairs, Henrico County has declared a state of local emergency to allow for a more efficient response. They have also established a local incident management team and set up a water issue helpline at 804-501-4275 (Option 2). Tanker trucks will be offering water to vulnerable residents at the Eastern Government Center and the East Mental Health Facility, both on Nine Mile Road. Residents will need to bring their own containers to retrieve this water. There will also be bottled water available at the four area libraries. Officials said Henrico -- along with Chesterfield and Hanover counties -- is providing assistance to Richmond in restoring the city's water treatment plant.
